On Friday, Dec. 7, 2012, Joy Lynne Hughes, a beloved and generous wife, mother, nana, and friend left this life unexpectedly. On March 3, 1942, Joy was born to Gordon and Evelyn Cudworth in Santa Barbara, Calif. Joy spent her growing up years riding horses in the foothills of Santa Barbara. It was her love of horses and participation in Fiesta that led to her meeting her future husband Larry Hughes at the early age of 13 years. They spent their dating years riding horses and participating in the Fiesta. Joy and Larry married in 1964 in Santa Barbara and spent the first 10 years of their family life there where they welcomed three children into the world, Kym, Carol and Don. The family moved to the Santa Ynez Valley in 1976. Joy enjoyed riding her horses that she broke and trained herself, on many of the beautiful ranches in the Valley. She was blessed to have many special friends with whom she shared these rides. Joy graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1960 and continued on at Santa Barbara Business College. After graduating there, she worked as an insurance clerk for nearly 40 years, taking brief breaks to work at her children’s schools. Besides being an accomplished horsewoman, Joy was also an incredible seamstress, artist and cook. Nothing pleased her more than creating a delicious meal to share, snacks on the patio or sewing her famous loungers and other treasures for her friends, kids and grandchildren. She also loved the outdoors and camping with her family. One of her favorite camping spots was at June Lake, which had a special place in her heart. She spent time there as a child with her family, during her courtship with Larry, and most recently with her kids and grandkids. All of her passions and talents, she shared with her family and friends. Whether it was making lounger pants, painting on the patio, sewing prom and wedding dresses, making a simple tote bag or an incredible drawing or painting, it was always to share with someone else. Joy’s greatest joys in life were her nine grandchildren Chase, Andy, Daci, Jordon, Jared, Luke, Alex, Kara and Owen. Camping trips, family get-togethers and holidays were some of her favorite times. Joy is survived by her husband of 48 years, Larry Hughes; her three children Kym Hughes, Carol Sutton (Randy) and Don Hughes (Amy); her nine grandchildren,;her brother Don Cudworth; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Graveside services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Ballard, at 11 a.m. A reception for friends and family will immediately follow at the Wilemsen Barn at 202 Dairyland Road in Buellton. – Loper Funeral Chapel, Directors
