Holiday cheer at hotel
By Jeremy Foster, Staff Writer
Christmas ornaments at the Santa Ynez Valley Marriott will benefit local non-profit organizations to bring the holiday joy to children in need.
Ten years ago, the Marriott started the fundraiser for shelters after Jan Jenny of San Luis Obispo contacted the hotel to take part in a program benefiting her county’s shelter. Jenny creates “angel pins” that are placed on an angel holiday tree in the hotel’s lobby. Martha Arias, executive housekeeper, runs the program that has benefited other shelters, such as the local People Helping People, United Way, the Lompoc Police Department, the Santa Ines Mission and others.
This year all donations will go toward the Children’s Miracle Network, which raises funds and awareness for 171 children’s hospitals. Organizers are seeking donations of $10 or more (cash, credit card or to charged room) at the hotel’s front desk for an angel pin or unwrapped gifts until Christmas. The fundraiser benefits an average of 200 children under 14 every year.
