Local Writer Releases 6th Comic Book

By Leanne Elliott

Ryan Claytor, a Santa Ynez High School Class of ’97 graduate, held a book singing at the Book Loft in Solvang on Sunday, July 15th. Claytor recently released his 6th book in a series of comic books titled “And Then One Day”. A steady steam of fans waited as he signed and doodle on the inside cover of each book, while discussing his inspiration for the series.

This most recent release is formatted as a daily journal, inspired by Claytor’s graduate school studies on the topic of autobiography. Ryan speculates that autobiography is not absolute truth, but rather the perception of what one has come to believe is true about oneself. The test of his theory is found in the pages of a humorous, self effacing, autobio comic strip. Copies of “And Then One Day” are available at the Book Loft in Solvang.

Buellton Welcomes Public to 5th Annual BBQ Bonanza

The City of Buellton welcomes the public to the 5th Annual Buellton BBQ Bonanza! Over 1,000 people attended last year’s event.  This year’s excellent community event will take place on Saturday, July 21st from 12-2pm at River View Park (151 Sycamore Dr.).

The City is pleased to sponsor this event to thank the residents of Buellton for their support in making our City a great place to live.  The Barbecue Bonanza will be a chance to meet and eat with our families, friends, and neighbors in the Valley.  The main course and drinks will be provided by the City, but we encourage you to bring a side dish to share with your fellow citizens.

The many attractions available to Bonanza-goers include water slides and kiddy pools provided in the “Wet Zone,” live music, climbing wall, archery, karate demonstration, and dozens of local businesses and organizations are participating with information tables and activities of their own.

We look forward to making the 5th Annual Buellton Barbecue Bonanza a fun and memorable day for the community, and we hope to see you there!

For more information about the event or if your business or organization would like to participate with a table or activity, please call Kyle Abello at 688-7529.

“Buellton is Our Town” Makes Voice Known

By Leanne Elliott

Protest signs were raised high before the start of July 12th’s City Council meeting at the Oak Valley School in Buellton. The 30 member organization “Buellton is Our Town” (www.buelltonisourtown.org) had a petition signing and protest against the annexation and mixed-used development plans that were up for consideration before the City Council. A core group of concerned citizens were pushing for a NO vote on Resolution 07-09 & to stop the “Sphere of Influence Study” being done as part of the development’s initial planning research.

Inside the school’s auditorium it was standing room only as developers, contractors and Buellton residents petitioned their plans, hopes and fears before the panel of five City Council members. A mall, commercial office space, hotel, wine tasting facilities, and mixed-use recreation are all part of the proposed plans. The Council terminated the “Sphere of Influence” study at Wednesday’s meeting, but no final decisions will be made about the larger plans for up to six months, as further research and information is presented to the Council and the community.
