PASO ROBLES, Calif. (AP) -- A financially struggling King City hospital will close its new cancer treatment center in Paso Robles just months after opening.
Linda Somers Smith, an attorney representing Mee Memorial Hospital, said Tuesday that the Mee Cancer Center will be shut down because “we cannot afford the drain.”
Eviction proceedings already have been filed by the owner of the building housing the center.
Jim Saunders, co-principal owner of Pacific Management and Development, said the hospital has not paid any rent for the cancer center since moving in Sept. 1.
The three-story facility began treating cancer patients in October.
In August, the hospital’s former chief financial officer,
Richard Lynn Wheat, was indicted on suspicion of embezzling $96,000 from the
hospital.
