Dozens of students
face detention
More
than 50 students received detention notices Dec. 17 at Santa Ynez Valley Union
High School when school officials performed their first “tardy sweep” just
after the bell rang for the start of school. Norm Clevenger, principal, said
the students and their parents had been warned for two weeks that the tardy
sweeps would begin.
“We
have made the announcements during first period and sent home parent
notifications, both by mail and e-mail, so this wasn’t as if it hadn’t been
discussed,” he said. Rumors between students were that more than 100 students
had been rounded up during the first sweep but Clevenger said the actual count
was closer to 50.
Being
caught in a tardy sweep has immediate consequences, he added. “Students not in class when the tardy bell rings receive immediate
notices for after-school detention. This school year we have recorded
and processed over 600 tardies. As a school we
believe strongly that being punctual is a critical life skill.”
He
said students would have three days to fulfill their detention requirement.
More sweeps will take place through the rest of the school year after students
return Jan. 7, 2008, from the holiday break.
