Art show scheduled

New works by Jael Fusager will be on display through December at Z Folio Gallery, 1685 Copenhagen Dr., Solvang. Fusager, known worldwide as a cloisonné artist, creates one-of-a-kind works with traditional oil glazing techniques and repeated firings, which produces brilliantly colored pieces of jewelry. Z Folio Gallery is owned by Michael Mendizza and Zdena Jiroutova and specializes in contemporary glass art, designer jewelry and large scale photo murals of nature.

 

Novelist schedules reading

Pulitzer Prize winner Jeffrey Eugenides, author of “Middlesex” and “The Virgin Suicides,” will give a lecture and reading Jan. 15 at 8 p.m. at Campbell Hall on the University of California at Santa Barbara campus. A best-selling author since the 1990s, Eugenides’ books have been made into movies and his fiction has been called “unprecedented” and “astounding” by critics.

His fiction, depicting American life in the 20th century, has also received the Ambassador Book Award, Spain’s Santiago de Compostela Literary Prize and the Great Lakes Book Award. More information about the lecture is available from 893-3449.

 

Economist will lecture in January

Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Muhammad Vunus, founder of Grameen Bank and other worldwide economic movements, will give a lecture Jan. 16 at 8 p.m. at the Arlington Theater at UCSB. The free event, titled “Creating a World Without Poverty,” will focus on his work in third-world countries and his new book by the same name.

A native of Bangladesh, he engineered the concept of “micro loans” during the 1970s and formed the Grameen Bank in 1983.

 

Film festival to be shown at UCSB

The UCSB Winter Cinema 2008 will offer 12 evenings of films, beginning Jan 9 through March 4, at Campbell Hall at 7:30 p.m. The series will focus on 26 international films, including “Amandla!” and “Into the Wild,” both of which have been listed as part of the Best of the 32nd Annual Banff Mountain Film Festival. The first film, “In the Shadow of the Moon,” will be shown Jan 9. “Deep Water,” is scheduled for Jan. 10. Other films will be announced in January, 2008. Evening of Guitar benefit slated

The Fourth Annual “Evening of Guitar” benefit concert for PCPA Theaterfest, will be held Jan. 19 in the Marian Theatre at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria. Featuring classical, Spanish, and flamenco music and dancing by Berto Flamenco, the event includes Los Perros, a live auction and a pre-show reception.

Robert Boyd, concert guitarist, and dancers Christina Villalobos and Ryan Zermeno, will perform as Berto Flamenco. Tony Harmon, Ray Pannell and Johnny Sandoval, guitar artists, are with Los Perros.

The auction will be conducted by Jim Glines, president of Community Bank of Santa Maria, and his assistant, Dr. Jose Oritz, superintendent and president of Allan Hancock College.
