SBCC
to offer new programs and courses in spring
Santa
Barbara City College looks forward to welcoming prospective students this
upcoming spring by offering new programs and courses that cover an extensive
array of subjects.
Newly
added programs include the Construction Academy’s Built Green Program, the
School of Media Arts Mobile Media Institute and a series of entrepreneurial
courses for its business program.
“I
believe that these new courses offer some great careers and technical education
opportunities for people who are looking to change careers, or preparing
themselves for promotional opportunities,” said SBCC representative Karen Sophiea.
The
college also has added psychology of film, which explores how theories are expressed
and portrayed in film. The class, Media, Culture and Society, studies how the
media shapes and influences all three.
“We
have also added some new language courses,” Sophiea
said. “They include Korean 101, Chinese Beginning Conversation and Spanish for
Native Speakers.”
To
enroll for SBCC’s spring semester or to view courses visit www.sbcc.edu. Registration will be open through Jan. 26,
2008.
SBCC’s
Adult Education also is offering a select number of series and courses for its
winter quarter.
The
program will be offering more than 750 courses, including various writing and
literature classes.
Its
schedule includes Recollecting and Writing, How to Write Quality Nonfiction,
Modern and Classic Short Stories and Enjoying Contemporary Literature.
Adult
Education will be hosting the 25th Annual Writer’s Workshop from 9 a.m. to 4
p.m. Jan. 10 at the Tannahill Auditorium, Schott
Center, 310 W. Padre St. in Santa Barbara.
“The
keynote speaker is Fannie Flagg and she’s written books and screenplays,” said
Sally Gill, public information specialist for Adult Education. “She’s really
something and very funny. So we’re thrilled that she is coming.”
Other
series include Mind and the Supermind: Expanding the
Limits of Consciousness. The series will feature
various speakers who will talk about many topics related to consciousness,
including discovering the power of awareness and science and spirituality.
On
March 8, the program will feature Adult Children of Aging Parents, which is an
annual conference that is intended to assist adult children in helping their
parents meet the challenges of aging.
“We
live in a community where people value education and life-long learning,” Gill
said.
“So
it’s a real treat and a rewarding endeavor to be supporting such a community.
It’s a great thing to be involved in.”
Most
Adult Education courses are free. Some classes have an optional fee and others
may charge $25 - $80 for enrollment.
The
winter quarter runs from Jan. 14 until March 22, 2008.
Adult
Ed is still pretty old-fashioned. If someone wants to enroll in a class, all
they have to do is show up for the first session and fill out some forms, Gill
said.
