Allie Chamberlin’s 101 Birthday

“What do you want for your birthday?” Fred Chamberlin asked his 100 year old mother who is 101 today.  Well, she wanted what she’s always asked for on her birthday, a ride in the wagon over the hills and dales of the Chamberlin ranch, in Los Olivos.  So, Fred hitched up the team of gigantic Belgian draft horses whose hoof would cover the whole of your tennis shoe if it got stuck below.

The birthday picnic was no less than home made fried chicken, fruit skewers and cookies which Allie ate with gusto. After a chorus of “Happy Birthday to you” (where I noticed “and many more…” was not sung at the end), Ailie was presented with an eloquent proclamation from our Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. It was to congratulate her. “Throughout your lifetime you have seen many changes in our world and have been witness to notable developments that have helped shape our recent history.”, it said.  “I am sure that you hold many special memories of the past 101 years and I hope that the remembrance of a happy birthday celebration will remain with you always.”  The amazing thing about Ailie, is, that it will.

Ed & Maureen Joyce have a Good Time saying Goodbye.

About 50 people filled the Elks Lodge April 27, to pay tribute to long-time Valley residents Ed Joyce and his wife Maureen, who will be moving to Sherman, Connecticut at the beginning of June. “We came here because it was a beautiful place,” Joyce said. “We had no idea about the warm reaching-out nature of the Valley.”

Along with the BBQ dinner served, an award was presented to Joyce for his contribution as Old Santa Ynez Day Parade M.C. Tears came to Joyce’s eyes as he gave his acceptance speech. “Getting old is not for sissies,” he said, jokingly. “We’ll be back to visit. We have so many friends here.”

It’s apparent that Ed’s love for the Valley is very much reciprocated by the community. The Valley is a special place. It’s a special day and Ed is a special person, Bosco Carricaburu said.

While Joyce said he’ll really miss the people. His wife Maureen specifically named long-time friend and Valley Journal Publisher Nancy Crawford Hall and Bo Riddick among her to be most missed Valley companions.
