Greyhound fête planned for Solvang
The
greyhounds are coming again to Solvang. The three-day event, slated for Feb.
8-10, promises to be another favorite with the locals as hundreds of greyhounds
and their owners gather for the annual Greyhound Festival.
A
national competition, the Solvang festival also will include this year’s
Greyhound Dog Haul, which allows for adoption of dogs by festival participants.
A full roster of vendors will occupy the Veterans Memorial Hall, 1745 Mission
Drive, during the festivities.
The
Greyhound Dog Haul will help 24 dogs get off of Oklahoma farms and into various
California adoption groups for a chance to find homes.
The
haul will begin a few days before the event and end in Solvang on Feb. 8,
making stops along the way to deliver dogs to adoption groups. Teddy Palmer of
Halfway Home Greyhounds, Oklahoma, and Craig Randle, NGA Inspector, will be in
charge of the dog haul and are both speaking Saturday.
Beginning
with photos and a blessing of the greyhounds by Father Michael of Old Mission
Santa Inés, the festival includes a fashion show,
races, special speakers, and a greyhound walk in the park.
Highlights
for the weekend will be the Blessing of the Hounds, planned for 1:30 p.m. Feb.
8, at the Mission; the Fashion Show, 5 p.m. Feb. 8, at the Veterans Hall; the
Solvang Streak, set for 10 a.m. Feb. 9 at Solvang Elementary School; and the
Greyhound Walk, from 9 to 10 a.m. Feb. 10 at Solvang Park.
