Adam Haws, D.D.S., opens new office

It’s been a long time in coming, but Feb. 4 will be the first day of business for Adam Haws, D.D.S., in his new offices at 101 Avenue of Flags, Buellton.

Since 2004, when he graduated with a degree in dentistry from University of the Pacific in San Francisco, Haws has kept busy working with his father, brother, and brother-in-law until he could open his own office. He also worked in the area for local dentist Art Kaslow during Kaslow’s three deployments in Iraq.

Haws’ father is Karl Haws, D.D.S., who has been a dentist in Santa Barbara for 50 years. His brother is Max Haws, D.D.S., Santa Barbara, and his brother-in-law is Kenneth Nash, D.D.S., Solvang.

Joining Haws in his new office will be Ingrid Russell and Robyn Clay, each with 20-plus years of experience in the local dental industry.

Besides introducing some of the latest dental techniques, such as an intra-oral camera, Haws said he will run a paperless office.

He expects to add a hygienist by summer, 2008. His wife, Camene, will handle the bookkeeping.

She also currently is scheduling appointments for his first month in the new office.

“I’m looking forward to bringing contemporary dentistry to Buellton,” Haws said.

“For example, I’ll be using digital X-ray and computerized charting, as well as movies and earphones so patients, especially the kids, can watch movies while we finish their dental work,” he said.

Haws also brought innovations to his father’s and Nash’s offices.

“I’ve worked in offices long enough to know and understand how to make the layout flow, how to make it comfortable and relaxing.

“I know what functions well and what is efficient. My patients will find my practice a very positive experience,” he said.

Another plus is that Haws speaks fluent Japanese and expects to bring quality dental work to the local Japanese community.

Haws learned the language while serving for two years as a missionary for his church in Japan.

He decided after graduating in International Relations from Brigham Young University in 1997 to change his career field to dentistry. Then he pursued his graduate studies and a three-year internship, working to “blend art and medicine.”

Part of the art Haws enjoys includes music. He trained as a tenor soloist and sang as a concert vocal soloist with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

Since moving to Santa Ynez, he has become active with various vocal groups, including the Tenors Three, affiliated with St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Los Olivos; the recent Carl Johnson musical, “A Voice in the Wilderness,” sponsored by the Presbyterian Church; and the Santa Ynez Valley Chorale.

Other members of the tenor group include John Reese and Peter Benecke. In the musical, Haws sang the role of Andrew, a support role for John the Baptist. As a member of the SYV Chorale, he has presented many solos. In fact, he said he may work “the singing dentist” into his logo for his new office.

Also active as a community leader, Haws works with the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 6, sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Haws is himself an Eagle Scout and holds two bronze palms.

Haws moved about a year ago to Santa Ynez, where he lives with his wife and three children, Keller, 6, Tessa, 4, and Cooper, 4 months.
