Warrior image leads to uproar
CARPINTERIA
(AP) —
Carpinteria High School’s warrior mascot could be
staying.
The
Carpinteria Unified School District board decided
Tuesday night that a committee will be formed to make a recommendation on
Native American imagery on the school campus.
The
school board had voted last month to keep the school’s Warrior team name but
remove paintings, logos, murals and other images depicting the school’s
American Indian mascot.
The
board decision was based on a complaint from a student member of the Chumash
tribe who complained the school’s mascot perpetuates stereotypes and is
offensive to Native Americans.
Student
and parent demonstrations followed, and the decision to form a committee came
after Tuesday’s contentious meeting attended by about 700 angry people.
