Board adopts resolution in support of Prop. 99 and opposing 98

The Santa Barbara County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to support Proposition 99 and oppose Proposition 98 at its regularly scheduled meeting May 13.

In its resolution, the board states that the “No on Proposition 98” campaign is represented by the League of California Cities, California State Association of Counties, League of California Homeowners, California League of Conservation Voters, California Alliance for Retired Americans and other leading state and local associations who oppose Prop. 98, which claims to prevent the government from taking private property through eminent domain to transfer to a third party, thereby constraining governmental use of land for redevelopment, affordable housing or public ownership of water or electric utility services, and will eliminate rent control laws in California.

In support of Proposition 99, the board joins the coalition of seniors, homeowners, business, labor, and environmentalists that also support Prop. 99. The principal claim by supporters of Prop. 99 is that it will not change state or local rent control laws, laws dealing with tenant protections, or affordable housing requirements, environmental laws or regulations, but will prevent governments from using eminent domain to take an owner-occupied home to transfer it to private parties.
