Los Prietos Boys Camp had its largest graduating class in school history with 22 students receiving their high school diplomas from Los Robles High. The wards were honored at a formal commencement ceremony at the Santa Barbara County Office of Education on Cathedral Oaks Road in Santa Barbara on May 14. Nine scholarships were awarded from Goleta Noontime and the Santa Maria Breakfast Rotary Clubs. Police chief Cam Sanchez of the Santa Barbara Police Department gave the keynote address.

The graduates were Inocente Adan, Ivan Arteaga, Jason Anderson, Javier Cabrera, Eric Delatorre, Efrain Garcia, Damian Gomez, Anthony Guzman, Jorge Hernandez, Juan Juarez, Travis Keller, Luis Lagunas, Jordan Lee, John Lopez, Refugio Ramirez, Richard Reyes, Roy Sarabia, Zachary Swanson, Tyler Tibben, Jared Winter and Josimar Zaragoza.

Los Prietos was established in 1944 as a county-owned correctional/treatment facility located on 17 acres in the Los Padres National Forest that provides residential services for designated male wards of the juvenile court. In addition to the regular school program, vocational education in computer technology and woodshop are offered, and all wards are encouraged to participate in kitchen/culinary arts, laundry, clerical, maintenance, landscaping, calisthenics, and carpentry crew. The camp forestry crew program and horticulture project provide educational training in using hand/power tools, landscaping and landscape architecture.

The boys also do wilderness work projects for the U.S. Forest Service and receive wildlife and vegetation education while learning nursery management and working on other forest projects.

Enhanced education services are also now available at Los Prietos Boys Camp Academy through the addition of “Cyber High” which offers a variety of courses from health education to world history, accredited through Fresno Unified School District. Many courses meet the college prep requirements for the University of California system.

Students can complete research-based activities using websites for in-depth analysis and electronic glossaries assist students with vocabulary. All quizzes and tests are scored electronically allowing for immediate feedback.
