Memorial Day ceremony schedule
American Legion Post 160 and the local Veterans of Foreign
Wars Post 7139 will hold ceremonies at local cemeteries in honor of those who
served in the armed forces.
On May 24 at 9:30 a.m., a special ceremony will be held at
Oak Hill Cemetery in Ballard, located at 2560 Baseline Road. Joining the
ceremony will be the Santa Ynez Valley Union High School football team, the
National Honor Society of Santa Ynez High, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and many
community members.
“It is an awesome sight to see our community cemeteries
decorated with a sea of flags, crosses and Stars of David in commemoration of
our veterans,” says Rudolph Henderson, commander of VFW Post 7139.
Each veteran’s grave will be decorated with an American
Flag, a medallion and religious symbol.
There will be a short talk by clergy and each ceremony
will also include a color guard, a bugler and an honor guard firing a rifle
salute.
The public is welcome and greatly encouraged to
attend in respect for past veterans and to celebrate the meaning of Memorial
Day.
