Reno’s
Hot August Nights
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Reno’s Hot August Nights
event., scheduled for Aug. 4-10, will feature much
more than car cruising.
The schedule includes everything from karaoke, sock hops
and hula-hoop contests to hot rod showcases and live entertainment.
The Reno Gazette-Journal said the event, a throwback to
the 1950s and ‘60s, is expected to draw 800,000 people and will include
performances by Davy Jones of The Monkees, Blood,
Sweat & Tears, Peter Noone and Herman’s Hermits,
and B.J. Thomas.
The newspaper reported that last year, the city of Reno
canceled the Saturday night “super cruise” downtown for fear of potential
violence from non-event participants. This year the cruise will be held on the
loop road at the Grand Sierra Resort, organizers said.
Racing legend Mario Andretti also will be back this year,
signing autographs at the Texaco tent at the Grand Sierra Resort on Aug. 7.
Also on the program, a team from New Zealand will build a
car from the ground up in less than 24 hours. The car will be built using parts
they purchase at the swap meet at the Reno-Sparks Livestock Events Center.
Their effort will be taped for
broadcast on Fox Sports Net, and afterwards the car will be taken to Bonneville
Salt Flats in Utah for an attempt to set a speed record.
