Lensman Gildred to show photos

Photographer Todd Gildred will present a small photo show and reception on July 7 at the Roasted Bean, 3558 Sagunto St., Santa Ynez.

Hors d’ouevres and coffee drinks will be served while guests look over the pictures. “The photos will be featured with a new process where each photo is professionally mounted on a painter’s canvas,” Gildred said. “They are a collection of my domestic and foreign travels.”

 

A bear, a walrus and Queen Latifah

Wildling Art Museum’s customary Free Friday Flick for July is “Arctic Tale,” but since the first Friday is July 4, the showing will be moved to July 11.

The film will screen at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 2901 Nojoqui St., Los Olivos, at 7 p.m.

The 110-minute movie is from the creators of “March of the Penguins” and tells the story of a young walrus and a young bear struggling to survive. Queen Latifah narrates the film.

The Museum provides free popcorn and cookies, wine, water and soft drinks. The films are underwritten by a grant from the Valley Foundation. Persons wishing more information or directions can call (805) 688-1082 or consult the Museum’s website, www.wildlingmuseum.org.

Joan Craton and Virginia Sloan have been elected to the Board of Directors of the Wildling Art Museum.

Craton has been elected to a three-year term on the Board of Directors of the Wildling Art Museum. Craton has an extensive history of volunteer work, most notably in her former residence of Jackson, Wyo.

Sloan, a founding Board member of the Wildling and Director Emeritus for the past several years, has been invited to return for a new three-year term.                                                               

The Museum operates from the historic Keenan-Hartley House, 2329 Jonata St., Los Olivos, and is located between Mattei’s Tavern and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. It is open to the public from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday.

 

Arts Outreach calls for students

Arts Outreach announced it has some openings for the third week of its Summertime Arts Program. The dates are July 21 through July 25, and a variety of activities are offered.

The morning program, from 9 a.m. to noon, offers sessions for K-2 and 3-6 children, in “Learn to Love Yourself,” with Beth Amine.

The other morning classes, for the same two age groups, will be “Exploring the Art of Asia” with Cynthia Devine. The children will participate in using watercolor and ink techniques, bamboo brush paintings and creating Chinese fans  

Third to 8th graders can also sign up for the introductory “Masks of the World” with Karina Puente, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Teens help near New Orleans

Six honor students from Santa Ynez Union Valley High School are relaxing now, after spending the first week of their summer vacation helping Habitat for Humanity build houses outside New Orleans.

Young people pitching in to help include Natalie Castillo, Parker Colvin, Peter Franklin, Jackson Jewett, Jessie McCurdy and Haley Snyder, along with chaperones.

The young people will be seniors next semester, and dedicated their week to applying siding and building storage units. Trip sponsors said the extreme humidity and southern heat were factors in sending the teenagers home tired, but satisfied.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    

Stow House says ‘Happy 4th’

Stow House and La Patera Park will present an old fashioned July Fourth celebration and concert.

There will be live entertainment, starting at 11 a.m., with Hot Lava playing for the kids, Dixieland by Ulysses S. Jazz and country cool by the Twangin’ Iguanas.

Visitors can then watch the fireworks at nearby Girsh Park, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m.

                                                    

Modern chamber works from MAW

Music Academy of the West will offer modern works in a series of chamber concerts, including a concert on July 8 at 8 p.m. at the Lobero Theatre.

Chamberfest will replace the long-running Tuesdays at 8 at the Lobero from past seasons. The new series on Tuesday evenings will emphasize “lesser known treasures of the chamber repertoire,” according to the announcement from the Academy.
