Donate or volunteer – help is needed

Residents and businesses of the Santa Ynez Valley and Santa Barbara County have been generous this season with donations, gifts and grants to non-profits and fundraising groups and youth programs. The following is a list of upcoming events for those wishing to donate funds or to volunteer their time. The list also includes groups that were recent recipients and information about offering continued assistance.

Spaghetti event to raise funds

Solvang Elementary School invites the public to a fundraising spaghetti dinner on Jan. 30 at the Solvang Veterans Memorial Building, 1745 Mission Drive. Between 5:30 and 8 p.m., members of the 6th grade class will wait tables and serve visitors spaghetti, salad, garlic bread and fruit salad for dessert.

Proceeds from the evening will be used for school field trips. Admission is $6 for those 12 and older, $4 for children 5- to 11-years-old, and $2 for those under four.

A second spaghetti dinner will be served by the 8th grade class on Feb. 28. For more information, call Melody Hunt at 857-1103.

Friendship House receives pledge

Solvang Friendship House, celebrating 30 years of service to the Santa Ynez Valley, received a pledge from members of the Friendship House Auxiliary and Phoebe Patterson, president, to raise $30,000 for existing programs for residents. The pledge, a check for $30, was given as a token for the pledge.

Friendship House offers progressive residential care, such as assisted living for persons with dementia related disorders and Alzheimer’s disease. Respite care and hospice services also are available at the facility.

Boy Scouts plan barbecue

Members of the Santa Maria Valley Boy Scout Troop 95 will host their annual barbecue Feb. 3 at the parking lot of St. Louis de Montford Church, 5075 Harp Rd., Orcutt, from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

For a $5 donation, the lunch will include a Santa Maria-style tri-tip sandwich, salsa, chips and a soda.  Tickets are on sale through Troop 95 and walk-ups are welcome.

Tables and chairs will be set up for those who want to eat on site and quick pick-up service will be available for those on the run. Groups or businesses interested in ordering in advance should call 347-9145. Free local deliveries will be available with pre-sale orders of 10 or more lunches.

Proceeds from the event will help with scouting activities. Troop 95 has been involved in many service projects that have benefited the entire Central Coast, such as construction improvements at Pioneer Park and other public buildings, installation of fire hydrant reflectors, clean-up projects, and assistance to the elderly. In addition, the troop provides color guard ceremonies at community events. Troop 95 is chartered by the St. Louis de Montford Knights of Columbus.

Voters receive assistance

The Fund for Santa Barbara has donated $8,000 to the Independent Living Resource Center to be used for its campaign to assist voters with disabilities. The group, which has offices in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo and Ventura counties, helps mobilize voting-age Americans with disabilities, assisting them with registration and voting.
