The
one-event, mini-rodeo, “community affair” hosted by Michael and Nancy Lippman, was co-sponsored by the Santa Ynez Valley Penning
Association.
Held
annually at the ranch for the past 15 years, the event included riders of all
ages who drew numbers for their team positions. They were then able to show off
their horsemanship by riding into the pen and separating the cattle.
“We
had teenagers and people well into their 70s riding,” said Nancy. “We make sure
the teams are arranged fairly by drawing out names, and then everyone competes.
It’s a lot of fun for everyone.”
After
the competition, winners received buckles as the prize. The catered lunch,
donated by New West Catering, owned by Jeff and Janet Olsson, Buellton, was
supplemented with potluck desserts, brought by the contestants, and wine from
the Great Oaks Ranch and Vineyard – Sauvignon Blanc and 2004 Windmill Hill Cuveé.
“It’s
an event that the whole community looks forward to every year,” Nancy said.
“They get to socialize, ride horses, share in lots of fun, and bring their
favorite dessert – we have only been rained out once. This year was one of the
best competitions and community gatherings we’ve ever had.”
