Students attend science camp

Fifth-grade students from Solvang and Los Olivos schools attended their annual outdoor science camp this year Feb. 5-8 at Rancho Allegre. The camp, a curriculum for life, earth and physical sciences, exposes the students to hikes, team building and special learning activities.

One hike was nine miles to the ridge of the mountains overlooking the Channel and the Santa Ynez Valley.

The day was clear, so students could see the Channel Islands as well. Teachers for this year’s camp were Solvang School’s Sherry Schultz, Cindy Duncan and Lynn Karaim, and Los Olivos School’s Lana Riley.

Children’s choir performs in SY

More than a dozen children performed as part of the Children of the World International Children’s Choir for members of the Valley Christian Fellowship in Santa Ynez on Feb. 17. The choir includes orphaned and disadvantaged children from such countries as India, Uganda, and the Philippines. The group sang in both English and native dialects.

A video presentation, sponsored by WorldHelp, based in Forest, Va., also was shown. The children have performed at Disney World in Florida, the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, and the Brooklyn Tabernacle in New York.

More information about the choir is available from www.worldhelp.net.

Three Solvang students sing

Three students from Solvang School sang the national anthem during the opening ceremonies for the amateur’s first-ever Race of Truth on Feb. 22, in Solvang.

The race was a fundraiser for the community and preceded the Amgen Tour of California that held its Stage 5 time trials later that afternoon. The students included Lindsey Suarez, 6th grade, Riley Jo Malafronte, 4th grade, and Baylee Frausto, 5th grade.

The trio received a loud cheer from the crowd as they finished the anthem.

The program will be presented from 4 to 5 p.m. that same day at the Lompoc Public Library in the Grossman Gallery and on March 5 at the Village Library from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
