Landscapes on display in March

Gallery Los Olivos will present “Embracing Nature” by Etty Klinger, featured Artist for the Month in March. A reception for the artist will be March 8 from 1-3 p.m.at the gallery, 2930 Grand Avenue, Los Olivos.

The display will be shown through March 31. Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

Klinger has been painting all her life, but her relocation from New York to California several years ago triggered her love affair with landscape painting. She has had several solo exhibitions on the Central Coast.

Although she considers herself a newcomer to the region, she feels at home when she paints her scenes. Her images are the union of what she sees and what she feels when she visits different areas.

She photographs constantly, but generally will use a reference photo as a guide, or a springboard, allowing it to remind her of a sunset, the rustle of dried grasses, the smell of rain, or a quickening breeze. To Klinger, how someplace makes her feel, connecting to the wonder and peace around her, is more important than where that someplace is.

Surfing film to premiere in SB

“Walking on Water,” a free film about the world through the eyes of two young surfers as they embark on a trip of a lifetime, will premiere March 13 at the Arlington Theatre in Santa Barbara from 7 to 9 p.m. The film, produced by Walking on Water, a Christian surf film company based in San Diego, features up-and-coming surf stars Luke Davis and Tyler Hallen on a world-wide surf adventure.

Along the way, they meet up with three-time world surf champion Tom Curren, shark-attack-survivor Bethany Hamilton, and pro surfers Damien and CJ Hobgood as they pass through Hawaii, Peru, Australia, Indonesia, and France. Not only do they meet the perfect wave, but they also discover different cultures, compassion, and God.

The company has produced such award-winning surf films as, “The Outsiders” and “Noah’s Arc.”  The film was inspired by the experiences of La Jolla native Bryan Jennings, founder and director of Walking on Water.

In addition to the film debut, there will be special guest appearances by Fuel TV host and professional surfer Matt Beacham; founder of Channel Islands Surfboards Al Merrick; and three-time World Surf Champion Tom Curren, who will perform several of his new songs with the Tom Curren Band. The evening includes a free surfboard giveaway. For more information, visit www.walkingonwater.com.

PCPA presents two plays

Two plays by award-winning playwright Yazmina Reza, “Art” and “Life X 3,” will be performed in the Severson Theatre in Santa Maria from March 13 through April 20.

“Art,” winner of the 1998 Tony Award for Best Play, will play through April 12, and “Life X 3,” begins March 28, rotating with the repertory until April 20.

“Art” is a comedy about three men who tackle the questions of friendship, intellectual honesty, and what is or isn’t art.

Serge, played by Omar Ricks, has just bought an expensive modern painting composed of a series of white diagonal lines on a white background.

Marc, portrayed by Peter S. Hadres, can’t understand the worth of the painting or the actions of his friend.

With mediator Yvan, played by Richard Gallegos, the three debate their interpretations of art, economics, friendship, the values of society, intimacy and human expectation — a debate that shakes the trio’s 15-year relationship to the core.

Guest Director is Erik Stein, scenic designer is Frederick P. Deeben, costume designer is Laurel Schultz, lighting designer is Jake Bray, sound designer is Matthew Carpenter and stage manager is Aleah Van Woert.

“Life X 3” explores the ramifications of dinner guests arriving on the wrong night; the two couples act out three different versions of the same disastrous dinner party.

Henry, a research astrophysicist, played by Andrew Philpot, and his wife Sonia, a lawyer portrayed by Elizabeth Stuart, are the unwitting and unwilling hosts for Hubert, one of Henry’s more successful coworkers, played by Corey Jones, and his aggrieved wife, Inez, portrayed by Polly Firestone-Walker.

They mistakenly arrive a night early for dinner. It’s the minute distinctions in mood, tone and action that can alter events and outcomes in this contemporary version of classic farce.

The director is Valerie Rachelle; the scenic designer is Frederick P. Deeben; the costume designer is Reiko Ishikawa; the lighting designer is Dan Schreckengost; the sound designer is Matthew Carpenter; and the stage manager is Christine Collins.
