The Santa Ynez High varsity wrestling team prevailed, 54-30, Tuesday night against visiting San Marcos. Among the Pirates’ winners: Josh Schaeffer, Matt Giles, Daniel Clark, Carlos Soto and Levi Gonnion.

Earlier, on Dec. 10, the Pirates fell short at Paso Robles, 45-29. Santa Ynez earned six of the 14 matches, as Gonnion and Casey Ellis both prevailed. “That’s another bigger school that has a long tradition in wrestling,” Pirates coach Brian Wallace said of Paso Robles. “In the past, our team would not have won more than one or two matches, so we are improving — but we haven’t accomplished our goals yet.”

Results of the varsity team’s Dec. 16 home meet with Fillmore were too late for press deadline. Santa Ynez’s growing wrestling program has become so large (50-plus members) this season, the Pirates were able to send two junior-varsity teams to Cabrillo Dec. 12 for a tournament. The top JV team finished fourth out of 14, losing a pair of matches by seven points. The No. 2 JV team also won three matches and finished seventh.
