TEEN WRITING WORKSHOPS TEACH BLOGGING, POETRY
By Christie Tarman, Contributing Writer
Young adults can try their hand at blogging this week and poetry next, under the direction of experts in both fields.
Local computer concierge Annie Yakutis will coach students in 7th-12th grades “How to Start a Blog,” from 4:30 to 6 p.m. July 22. “Apple Annie” has 30 years of computer experience, and will walk students though the basics of signing up for a free blog from Wordpress.
For students less concerned with technical know-how, there will be a chance to practice poetry under Marcia Meier, published poet and former director of the Santa Barbara Writers Conference. The first poetry workshop will be for students in grades 9th-12th and will take place at 4:30 p.m., July 29. The second workshop will be offered to middle school writers, at 10:30 a.m. July 31.
Taking place at the Solvang Public Library and supported by both the Solvang Library and the Friends of the Solvang Library, these free workshops are part of a summer-long effort to encourage and support writing among young adults in the Valley.
Senior Library Technician and Branch Supervisor, Carey McKinnon, is thrilled to have experts like Yakutis and Meier offering wisdom and passion to local teens. Meier, who recently received a Woman of Achievement Award from the Association for Women in Communications Santa Barbara Chapter, mentors local writers and leads writer’s retreats in the Santa Barbara area. She currently writes for numerous publications, including the Los Angeles Times and Santa Barbara Magazine. Although she will be teaching poetry to the teens who attend her workshop, she will bring other experience and insight to the table.
