The Santa Ynez High varsity wrestling team Tuesday fell 37-36 to Santa Maria. The Pirates were without three starters, and the Saints took advantage of the backups, pinning all three. Saturday is the last Los Padres League competition of the season.

“We hope to bounce back and have a strong showing,” said coach Brian Wallace. “On a bright note, this was the last time that our seniors had the opportunity to wrestle in front of the home crowd. They represented themselves well and led the team in points scored.”

On Tuesday night, the following Pirates won matches in their respective weight classes:

Chris Lastra (140)

Matt Giles (171)

Blake Chaves (189)

Jacob Preciado (215)

Winning by decision:

Cody Zavalla (145),

Abraham Santos (152)

Patrick Clark (160).

Matt Mintz, Tanner Hamson and Jaden Carney also won. The Santa Ynez junior varsity squad prevailed, 66-6. On Saturday morning, the Pirates travel to Lompoc.
