The Westin Kierland in Scottsdale,Arizona is home to arguably the best physical training program in golf. The Fore-Max program is the cutting edge of fitness training and has become very popular with professional athletes. Now, guests at the luxurious Westin Kierland Resort and Spa can also join the Fore-Max training regimen.

Fore-Max

The approach to Golf Fitness has evolved dramatically over the past few years. Long ago, golf pros did not even believe in working out unless it was a 12-ounce curl at the 19th hole. Those days are long gone. To perform at the top level in today’s game, you must have a dynamic fitness program. Amateurs as well can gain from these techniques and see immediate gains in distance as well as conditioning. The Fore-Max program was developed by fitness guru Steve Heller with substantial help from Westin Kierland’s Top 100 golf instructor Mike LaBauve. Over the past 30 years, LaBauve has guided the careers of many PGA and LPGA stars. He knows exactly what kind of shape a top golfer must be in. Together with Heller they have developed a unique golf specific program. These sessions are guaranteed to increase distance and stamina on the course. Heller directs the sessions and it is quite an experience. Fore-Max combines the best elements of Yoga and Pilates in an intense cardiovascular workout. Heller has a wonderful attitude which allows him to treat experts and beginners alike. His vibrancy keeps these sessions lively throughout. Even those in great shape are going to feel muscles they have never used. Ricky Barnes, Miller Barber and Pat Hurst are some of the professional golfers who are regulars. Many of the Phoenix-area professional teams also use the program. I would suggest at least two sessions to familiarize yourself with this workout and they will give you a DVD to take home.

The Resort

The Westin Kierland is a grand hotel with an eye-catching entry and lobby area. The large circular entry is expertly manicured making for a pleasing arrival. The lobby opens up to views of the golf course, emerald lakes and nearby mountains. The rooms are found in the main structure as well as in casitas behind the large pool area. This is the big time in pool experiences with two separate areas. The family pool includes a large, lazy river and the adult pool is adjacent to the Spa.All rooms at The Kierland feature Westin’s signature Heavenly Bed Collection assuring a comfortable night’s rest. The grounds at the Kierland are spacious and make for a pleasant walk at just about any time of day. You might want to catch the evening bagpipe display that celebrates the origins of golf. As you walk behind the resort, take a moment or two to watch the players navigate the huge water hazard fronting this closing hole. Even though you are in the middle of the city, the unique mounding and rolling design give only natural views to the green fairways and distant mountains. Shoppers will want to stroll over to the Kierland Commons, which has a large collection of fine stores and restaurants.

The Golf

There are three nine-hole layouts at Kierland with the Acacia, Ironwood and Mesquite Courses. Scott Miller formerly of Nicklaus Designs was the architect here. His work includes Coeur d’ Alene and We-Ko-Pa, both widely acclaimed. The elevation changes make for a variety of looks at Kierland including even a Scottish Links feel. The 27 holes allows for three different 18-hole configurations with each maxing out at just about 7,000 yards. There are multiple tee options all the way down to right around 5,000 yards. A unique and fun way to play golf here is on your own Segway. The Westin Kierland is the first course in the country to offer Segway Golf. The golf facility includes a state of the art practice range and the La Bauve Academy at the far end. Mike and Sandy La Bauve have long been at the top of the golf instruction profession and well worth a visit. Another unique innovation at Kierland is Climate Controlled Golf. The driving range features an air-conditioned canopy system allowing for cool breezes and shade on the hotter days. The club’s golf carts are also air-conditioned to allow for on course relief as well. There is something for every level of golf at Kierland. For more information, visit www.Kierlandresort.com.
