The Santa Ynez Boys’ basketball team struggled in their loss to Nipomo Jan. 5, losing 56-49. The Pirates played hard but fared no better in their match up against Morro Bay on Jan.7, falling 62-49. The Pirates’ next game was scheduled for Jan. 12 against the Lompoc Braves. (The final was not available at Journal press time.)

Next up, the Pirates take on the Santa Maria Saints at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, at home.

In the Nipomo game, Zach Foss led the Santa Ynez team with 14 points, while Randy Brittain and Dane Bolitho added 10 each. Wyatt Garley had 7 points, Connor Reck 6, and Bobby Moir 2. This was Moir’s first game back since fracturing his leg in the second round CIF football game. “It was good to see him get out there and get going. We are going to need him in high gear when we play Nipomo next time, with all their 6-foot-7, 6-foot-6 and 6-foot-3 players,” said head coach Jeff Reck.

The Pirates also lost to Morro Bay last week, 62-49. Morro Bay is the only team in the Los Padres League that remains undefeated. “We were the first team in our league to get within 20 points of them. We feel we could beat them if we could all get healthy, plus hot from the field, on the same day, as we did against Carpinteria both times we played them,” said Reck.

Garley was on fire, racing down the length of the court, and fighting for shots over the Morro Bay athletes that towered over him. In this breakthrough game for him, Garley scored 27 points; Foss and Reck added 8 points each; Bolitho, Max Fritsch, and Colton Aho all added two points apiece.

The Pirates were 8-9 overall and 1-3 in league play.
